Original is about 5 x 7 inches. The word "Wildness" was first written with a Zig calligraphy marker, then traced with pencil and tracing paper and modified to improve the letter shapes before inking the outline. I then scanned the outline into the computer and painted the birchbark and three-dimensional effects in Painter. The background watercolor is also actually a Painter creation. As is true of much of my work, the entire piece never existed as a physical "original," but was completely assembled for the first time only in the computer.
An aside about Painter and my use of the computer for so many of my paintings: it takes just as many strokes on the Wacom tablet to make the painting in Painter as it would take conventional brushstrokes on paper; it's just less messy. And the "undo" feature can be a lifesaver! |
